Dismantle the Architecture

Dismantle the Architecture

This faux public art was used to keep people from sitting/sleeping on a ledge outside an "alternative" consumer center. The management tried to disguise their attempt to keep people from congregating or socializing along the sidewalk by making the obstruction look like little flowers. Consume then go to the parking garage to get your car, and get the hell out.

Dismantle the Architecture

Like graffiti artists carry markers and police officers carry guns, we shall carry wrenches. The monkeywrench as both a symbolic and utilitarian tool, that will be used to destroy, dismantle, dissassemble, take apart:
buildings, structures, constructed environments, infrastructure, that oppress the individual through control, regulations, permanence; all of which help normalize subjectivity, condition minds, force persons into submission, and mute creativity.
By collecting and holding onto screws, nuts & bolts, the objects could still be charged with energy from the action of dismantling. They act as signifiers for the action that took place and can further spread the idea and movement. They are a record, document that could function similar to a trophy or certificate; a sign of completion.
This shall be the next movement, beyond graffiti. Instead of responding and creating on the surface, the entire structure shall be disassembled, melted down, and cast into a model of (the future) Utopia.

using spaces not as intended

Document examples of people using public and or commercial spaces in ways they were not intended to be used.

*My friend used a monument information plaque as a shelter to get out of the rain.

*Graffiti everywhere.

*Hallways and streets become places to meet, exchange, converse. They are meant for circulation but as public meeting places become fewer and fewer, and all get converted to consumption based sites, paths and transportation routes become the only place for interaction.

*Homeless take on roles as inventors and improvise in methods of parasitic living.

*Noah Peffer installed a permanent sign along the road.

*Street skaters use the landscape in creative ways reimagining possibilities.

Public Exchanges

People having public, unplanned exchanges that are not economic.

*Valentine's Day gifts...some how these are still deeply rooted in the economy.

*I had conversations about art while at work, however I was getting paid at the time.

*While at Kinko's printing manifestos and posters, we had a conversation with the graveyard shift employee., however he was working at the time, and we finessed free copies out of him.

*My friend interviewed a founder of "the Smell" in the ally outside.

*Thai food was offered as part of a film screening and Valentine's celebration.

*I served cupcakes I found in the dumpster at an art opening.
